"Finally finding my school spirit in the voting booth" by: Jessica Shepard

If you’re one of our consistent readers or a subscriber, then you’ve probably read a column or two where I regretfully inform you all that I don’t have much school spirit.
I’m not one to avidly follow teams or contests or tournaments, but I recognize that each of those instances takes a host of skills to compete in – I just don’t have personal dog in the hunt.
And while my lack of school spirit is honestly still tied to personal experiences I had back in the day, that doesn’t mean I’ve completely abandoned my alma mater!
In this paper and to the best of our ability, we cover the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to countywide news.
A few months ago, I found a stash of some of my first stories as a reporter.
Lo and behold, one such copy featured a 2009 Bay City ISD bond election story had helped me land my college editorial job and paved the way for the other multiple bond elections I’d cover in the future.
In fact, I’ve been present for the majority of those from three local districts over the years since and am currently waiting to see what happens Nov. 3.
While there’s plenty of discourse making the rounds on social media, I’ve noticed that there’s also a lot of misinformation out there, too.
My mom always told me that the guiltiest dogs bark first and are usually the loudest – which makes me wonder if these keyboard warriors were actually some of our readers or took the time to research before stirring the pot against Propositions A & B.
It really is all spelled out there in black and white online, plus I really do commend Bay City ISD Superintendent Chris Townsend for spearheading this whole effort to save our district.
Yes, you read that right OUR district – meaning I’m invested and rooting for both propositions to pass.
To be fair, I’ve covered bond elections for nearly two decades and hate to tell you, but I’ll always side with the schools in question.
Even when it seems like some outrageous dollar amount or there’s bitter feelings still poisoning the public from a decade ago – I’ll ALWAYS vote in favor of the school district.
That also counts double when state and federal officials are currently waging war on education in public schools to support their backwards and honestly detrimental agendas.
Compressed tax rates, unfunded mandates, and the theft of public funds to support private vouchers are nothing short of rage-inducing!
I’m a product of public schooling and want nothing more than to continue to see our districts providing more opportunities and chances for future children to attain their goals and dreams.
After all, I’ve heard officials waxing poetic about bringing young adults back to the community for years and as much as I love the idea of an Aldi setting up shop here – I don’t think it’s going to matter much if we continue to let our districts flounder because some elected dingbats decide students and staff are worth less in Matagorda County.
Pushing to support local public schools over all others is the hill I’ll gladly die on and continually vote in favor for – regardless of naysayers, the bitterly entitled or bottom-of-the-barrel elected officials.
