MC Democratic Party elects Dearing as chair

The Matagorda County Democratic Party Executive Committee has elected Nora Dearing as their new chair.     Dearing did a prior stint as MCDP Chair from 2012-2016 and is stepping in to fill the unexpired term of Stephen Logan, who resigned due to personal reasons.

"VVISD trustees OK Shannon Permenter as new AD" by: Jessica Shepard

Van Vleck ISD school board members unanimously approved hiring Shannon Permenter as the new district Athletic Director (AD) at their regular meeting Monday night.    Permenter has been serving as the head football coach and interim AD prior to the start of the school year.

"Split vote puts off jailer salary raise to January" by: Mike Reddell

A long and contentious discussion about pay raises for Sheriff’s Department jailers ended with a split vote to wait until January before approving the raise, at the court’s regular meeting Monday, Oct. 16.    At issue was a proposed supplemental increase of $256 per pay period to detention officers.

Twenty-three local high school seniors took to Bay City High School’s auditorium stage last Saturday to find out who would be crowned as the 2023-2024 Bay City Lions Club Rice Festival Queen.    Van Vleck High School senior Hope Cornett was crowned Rice Festival Queen on Oct. 14.

Rice Festival begins Oct. 19

The 77th Annual Bay City Lions Club Rice Festival opens from 5-11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Matagorda County Fairgrounds.    Gate entry is $10 per person all day.     This year’s carnival is provided by Kenny’s Funland Carnival.

The Matagorda County Cattlemen’s Association presented its “Silver Spur Award” to Clyde Ashcraft’s family at its 39th annual meeting and banquet on Oct. 12.    The “Silver Spur Award” is the most prestigious honor given by the ranching and livestock industry in Matagorda County.

"Arson fire destroys trailer home" By Dan Shook

The Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, the Bay City Fire Marshal, and the Bay City Police Department were dispatched to a trailer home fire at 2101 Horn Rd #2, on Monday, Oct. 9, at about 7 p.m.       A local resident notified dispatch some rolled up carpet on the porch was smoldering and smoking.
