"BCCDC moves on with $15M aquatic center" by: Jessica Shepard

   Bay City Community Development Corporation (BCCDC) board members unanimously approved moving forward on the $15 million aquatic center project Monday afternoon.  Board member Jeanette Bell was the only one absent from the meeting.

   Matagorda County wants the Texas Legislature to officially designate the county as the Birding Capital of Texas.  Commissioners Court unanimously passed a resolution to that effect Monday morning, Feb. 24, with a City of Bay City delegation in support of the county’s effort.

   Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Association’s 2025 Fair and Rodeo royalty winners were chosen last weekend.Jaymee Mielsch was crowned the 2025 MCFLA Rodeo Queen on Saturday, Feb. 22.

"BCISD takes no action on superintendent contract renewal" by: Jessica Shepard

    After about three hours in closed session, Bay City ISD trustees took no action on Superintendent Dr. Dwight McHazlett’s contract last week.  All board members were present for the Feb. 18 meeting.  Per the district’s website, McHazlett’s contract expires July 31, 2027 – he was hired in 2022.

Police investigate shooting death at apartment complex

   Bay City police are investigating the shooting death of man accused of a home invasion robbery and an auto theft at gunpoint at Palm Village Apartment Complex Feb. 13.  Officers were initially sent to 1901 Palm Village, about the stolen vehicle around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13.

BCISD filings: 2 unopposed, 3 file for 1 seat

   Filings for the May 3 Bay City ISD trustee election are complete – for three total positions.  Positions 1 and 2 held by incumbents Trent Tinnin and James Scardami respectively are unopposed.  Position 3 incumbent Felix Nunez will be defending his seat from Kenneth Eaton and Sayrah Dwight Craft.

3 escape Katy St. house fire

   Arcing electric lines are blamed for sparking a house fire at 2219 Katy Thursday, Feb. 20, Fire Marshal Dan Shook said.  Bay City Police Department, Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, and Shook responded to the blaze at about 6:30 a.m.

Smoke detectors saves two

   Smoke detectors are credited with saving the lives of a Fifth Street resident and her adult grandson when the house they were in caught fire about 6 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21.
