WCJC Foundation raises more than $200,000 at ‘Blackjack, Glitz & Glamor’

   The Wharton County Junior College Foundation celebrated a milestone year in grand fashion on Saturday, May 30, as more than 275 guests gathered at the Houston Marriott Sugar Land for the third annual Blackjack, Glitz & Glamor fundraiser.

   Commissioners recognized three sheriff’s deputies for heroic actions protecting Matagorda County citizens, heard concerns from Sargent citizens about moving the Precinct 6 Constable’s office and learned about an upcoming data center rally at the court’s meeting Monday.

Early voting under way for Council runoff

   Monday, June 1 was the start of early voting in the June 13 Runoff Election between Cory McCray and Stacy L. Rowh for Place 1 on City Council.  The May 2 election ended with an eight-vote difference between Cory McCray who received 239 votes for 44.67%, and Stacy L. Rowh with 231 votes, 43.18%.

   Main Street board members unanimously approved two façade grant applications last week.  Karen Stephens was the only member absent from the May 27 meeting.  A $337 façade grant application for The Collective salon was approved for mural signage.
On Monday May 25th Hawley Cemetery held its annual Memorial Day Program. The weather was beautiful and there was a great turnout. During the Star Spangled Banner, those attending enjoyed a flyer by Flying V Aviation out of Louise. It was a special moment of the day.  Contributed photo
